Russian is the most widely spoken Slavic language, and is currently the most widely spoken language in Europe. In addition to its status as the official language of Russia and of former Soviet republics such as Kazakhstan and Belarus, the use of Russian is also very widespread in former Soviet states which transitioned to the use of local languages after the dissolution of the Eastern bloc, such as Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia.

Until 1991, Russia was the language which was used to connect between the residents of the former member states of the Warsaw Pact, and is currently spoken by millions of people around the world. The many waves of immigration which reached North American shores in the early 20th century, and in the 70’s and early 90’s of the last century, created many Russian speaking communities in central cities like New York, Boston, Toronto and Chicago, and the current number of native Russian speakers in North America is estimated at over 800 thousand.  Russian is also an official language at the United Nations, which makes the translation of documents and materials from Hebrew to Russian particularly important.

In Israel, Russian is an especially important language, since it is the mother tongue of over one million citizens of Israel. The significant size of the Russian speaking community in Israel, many of whom continue to preserve their language and culture, including Russian newspapers, television channels and websites, increases the importance of Russian to Hebrew and Hebrew to Russian translation, due to the existence of various organizations and businesses who address the Russian population in Israel, or who would like to begin addressing that population.  There are also at times bureaucratic inquiries which require notarized translations of documents from English and Hebrew into Russian, or from Russian into those languages. In such cases, it is important to understand that although various services are available online which allow free translation from one language to another, language tools of this kind usually do not address the context of the words within the sentence.

In Russian translation, as with any other language, it is very important to remember that simply being bilingual does not make one a translator. Russian translation is a more complex process than simply converting from one language to another, and requires an in-depth understanding of the language, customs and culture of the target audience. A professional translator translating from Hebrew into Russian must be highly aware of the grammatical differences between the languages, and of the characteristics of each language, and must have experience and expertise in the art of translation which allow him or her to produce a result which flows naturally and is easily understood.
